Malin is an animated project under Fantastic Fables. Fantastic fables is an animated series that retells folktales from all around Asia by giving it a fresh new spin.

Based on the popular Indonesian legend Malin Kundang, I wanted to adapt the story in a fresh new setting. The story itself has a message on to not forget your parents’ love and hard work despite how far you’ve grown. The straight-forward structure of the original story gave me the freedom to insert more depth into the world and character. By adapting the story with a desert setting accompanied with fantasy elements, I hope I can give it a breath of fresh air to the audience.
The original story
Malin Kundang is a story about a mother and her son, Malin. They live poorly in a small fishing village. As Malin gets older, he left his mother to search for work outside the village. The son works hard and becomes a rich man.

After years being left alone, the mother finally heard news about her son coming back to the village. Malin, together with his wife, board off the ship on the village docks. The mother excitedly ran towards her son and hugged him. The son's wife asked him who this woman is. Embarrassed of his mother's ragged outfit, Malin pushed her away saying that he doesn't know her. Hurt and sad, the mother calls a storm and cursed Malin into a rock. He tried to apologize and pleads to his mother but it is too late.
