Animatic

Kiki seeks her sister’s attention on her birthday, but her sister is too occupied with a box.

An animatic I made for my first year project. I challenged myself as a storyteller to create a bright and heart-warming story for all ages.

Character drawings and objects are done in Photoshop, while backgrounds are done in Illustrator. Animatic edited and compiled in Premiere Pro.

Process

Story Development

At first, the story involves a shy girl facing her fear to interact with people, in which her fear is symbolized as a looming shadow.

I decided to ground the story which ends up being a story of 2 sisters.

The sketches below details on each character's goals. After detailing out their goals, I made the 3 Act structure. This process requires back and forth between the 3 Act structure and the character's motives to make sure the actions they did makes sense and in-character

Around the same time, I started sketching the layout of the house and room since the story is very dependent towards the setting

As seen from the sketches, the characters were anthropomorphic cats. But to fit the setting, they were changed into humans. The designs are still relatively the same, only different species.

I want the characters to look cute and energetic to attract children. The designs are heavily stylized with round shapes and exaggerated proportions. I make sure the characters have a simple design to save production time.

Character Design

Background Design

Before starting the backgrounds, I made sure all the furniture and spaces goes according to the characters.

I'm going for a minimalistic style with soft colours so it'll not steal attention from the characters and angular shapes to appear more dynamic

References, Trials, and Errors!

I took some reference photos to help me create shots from different angles. Here's one shot from a lower angle.

This shot has gone so many trial and error that it went to 4 sketches before finally settling on one.

The first sketch (bottom left) lacks the movement and power the shot implies.
