Animation
Based on the popular Indonesian legend Malin Kundang. Mande lived with her son, Malin, in a small desert village which housed a special crystal refered as "Heart of Naga". One day, Malin left to the city for a chance of a better future, and thus Mande and Malin's bonds are challenged
This project is based on a brief to make an animated trailer for the next episode of "Fantastic Fables", a series that puts a different spin on Southeast Asian Myths.
For this project, I Challenge myself to create a story in a bigger scope. In this case, a fantasy desert setting, contrasting the original story's fisherman village.

Setting
The idea is to have a fantasy spin on the original story. I end up choosing desert as the main setting to contrast the original story's maritime setting. The setting is inspired by sci-fi/ fantasy medias such as Star Wars and Dune,
The story focuses on 2 areas, a big bustling city and a small poor village. To make the overall world more engaging, I add a crystal called "Heart of Naga" being a powerful a mysterious crystal residing in the village. The crystal being a very important part of the village, it also affects the residents' physical appearance.
Character Design
Mande's outfit are based of Western Sumatra's Bundo Kanduang. The traditional outfit itself is very memorable due to its big headpiece. The headpiece itself look like an ox horn, so I decided to gave her a mask that resembles an ox.
I gave Malin's outfit to have adventurous feel, like a young scavenger looking for more in life. His older version's outfit is based on attire worn by Sumatran noblemen
Final Design
Background
Painting backgrounds is not my strength so drawing these background is a big challenge. I have to revise it multiple times because it's lacking depth and has a bad visual hierarchy
